How much time a week your business Instagram really takes
The question is never asked out loud, but it is there: "if I take this seriously, how much of my week disappears?". Without that number, the mind answers "a lot", and then you never start.
The time is not where you think
Publishing a post takes two minutes. Writing it takes twenty. Deciding what to write takes the rest of the afternoon, and that is the part nobody times, because it does not look like work: it looks like you staring at your phone.
That is why two people with the same number of posts spend wildly different amounts of time. It is not the volume. It is how many times you start from scratch.
The maths, task by task
For three posts a week, in a one-person business, the honest maths is roughly this.
- Deciding the month's themes: 1 hour, once a month.
- Writing the texts: 20 to 30 minutes per post, if you already know the topic.
- Photo or video: 30 minutes a week, if you do it all in one go.
- Replying to comments and DMs: 10 minutes a day, and that one cannot be batched.
Two to three hours a week, if you are organised
Adding it up, it lands between two and three hours a week. That is the real cost of three weekly posts and an active profile. It is not nothing, but it is less than most people imagine, and it fits in one morning.
The same work done scattered costs double. Five half-hour sittings produce less than one two-hour sitting, because in each one you spend the first ten minutes remembering where you were.
If you do not have those hours
Then post less, and post consistently. Two posts a week for six months is worth more than five a week for three weeks. Consistency is what counts, and it costs less than volume.
The mistake is choosing your frequency by what would be ideal instead of what is actually left in your week. The ideal frequency is the one you will still be doing in March.
