Instagram metrics: the four that say something

The insights panel offers more numbers than any small business can use, and none of them comes with instructions. Four is enough.

Why likes are not on the list

Liking is the cheapest gesture there is: one tap, no cost, no intent. It measures politeness, and politeness does not pay bills. A post can get two hundred likes and no messages.

It is not that likes mean nothing. It is that they mean far less than their prominent placement suggests.

The four

From coldest to warmest, and the last is the one that turns into money.

  • Reach: how many people saw it. Tells you whether the post was distributed.
  • Saves: how many kept it. Tells you whether it was useful.
  • Shares: how many sent it to someone. Tells you whether it was good enough to risk their own reputation.
  • Messages: how many talked to you. Tells you whether there was intent.

Each answers a different question

High reach and low saves means the cover hooked and the content did not. High saves and zero messages means you taught well and never invited anyone to buy. High messages with low reach means the post found few people, but the right ones.

It is the combination that diagnoses, never a single number. That is why three of the four are useless in isolation.

Look once a month, not every day

A single post says nothing: it depends on the day, the hour and what else was happening. Twelve posts say something. Looking every day produces wrong conclusions and real anxiety.

Once a month, half an hour, with the twelve in front of you. That is enough to decide the next month, and that is all the numbers are for.

The closed month's numbers, next to what was published, is what ReadyMonth shows when the month ends.
