What to do when nobody engages
Three months publishing consistently and the comments are still just your sister. Before concluding it does not work, it is worth looking at the causes in order.
Low engagement is not the same as zero result
Plenty of people read and never comment, especially with local business content. The person who will order in three weeks has been watching your posts in silence for a month.
That is why the first number to check is not comments: it is messages received and customers saying they came from there. If those exist, the silence is only appearance.
The causes, in order of likelihood
From most common to rarest, and each has a different fix.
- The post asks for nothing, and nobody knows what to reply.
- The audience is too small to produce visible comments.
- The subject is about you, not about a problem the reader has.
- The followers came from outside your audience and are not interested.
A closed question is the fastest fix
"What do you think?" is not a question: it is an invitation to compose an answer from scratch. "Chocolate or vanilla?" costs one tap, and someone who answered once answers again.
It is not an engagement trick: it is removing the cost of replying. And it works far better in stories, where the reply is a button.
Start the conversation yourself
Commenting genuinely on customers' and neighbouring businesses' accounts brings more conversation than any post asking for comments. It is manual work, like the first hundred followers, and has the same effect.
And reply to every comment that appears, even emojis. An account where the owner replies is an account worth commenting on.
The right question in each post is a monthly decision, not an inspiration on publishing day.
