Reels, carousel or photo: which to use for what

Every month someone announces that Instagram now favours one format. The next month it is another. Meanwhile, whoever chooses by content keeps getting it right.

The format is the shape, not the subject

The right question is not "what gets the most reach?". It is "does what I have to say have steps, movement, or a single image?". The answer gives you the format on its own.

A reel of something that should have been a photo ends up as ten seconds of nothing. A carousel of a single sentence ends up with nine empty pages. The wrong format costs more time and delivers less.

The choice, in four lines

It covers almost everything a small business publishes.

  • It has steps or a list: carousel. Each page is a step, and people move at their own pace.
  • It has movement or transformation: reel. Before and after, process, hands working.
  • It is an image that speaks for itself: photo. Finished product, result, detail.
  • It is fleeting or conversational: story. Today's behind-the-scenes, a poll, a notice.

The reach of each serves different purposes

Reels reach people who do not follow you, so they serve to be found. Carousels and photos are mostly seen by existing followers, so they serve to convince. Stories talk to people who already like you, so they serve to maintain.

An account with only reels grows and does not sell. An account with only photos sells to the same people and does not grow. That is why the mix matters more than whichever format is in fashion.

A mix that works

For three posts a week: one reel, one carousel and one photo. It is not sacred, it is a starting point. After a month the numbers show which of the three deserves more room in your case.

What does not work is deciding the format post by post, in the moment. That turns every publication into a fresh decision, and that is how a week goes by with none.

ReadyMonth spreads the formats when it lays out the month, so everything does not fall into the same type of post.
